An automatic software update just made the Tesla Model S accelerate slightly faster. So fast, in fact, that the five-seat electric car now match McLaren's MP4-12C supercar.

Tesla can issue new code which cars automatically download and install without any action required by the owner. These periodic updates usually come with a wide range of alterations that improve the performance or efficiency of the car, but also tweak the in-car computer and smart features.

60 miles is ~ 96 kms.

Tesla P85D 0 to 60mph acceleration will improve by ~0.1 sec soon via over-the-air software update to inverter algorithm

— Elon Musk (@elonmusk) January 29, 2015

Tesla's Model S P85D could already accelerate from zero to 60mph in just 3.2 seconds – when the car was set to “insane" mode - but the new software update will trim that down by 0.1 seconds to 3.1.
Musk tweeted that the update worked by improving the inverter algorithm used in the car, and added that the insane mode was actually created to increase traction in snow: “insane speed was a side effect," he said.
